Like Summer Even Though It’s Dark: Hayden Bowen

May 19, 2020 Kate Belew with Hayden Bowen (Los Angeles)

what is the calculation you made on that morning

when you flung hinges off of hinges

brushed your hair until smooth

and walked right into the street saying

"it smells like summer even though it's dark"

and when was the last time it rained

as you stood under your vinyl red umbrella

somewhere almost possessed and said

"Even roses can bloom in the cracks of stone"

but god, aren't you in favor of throwing it all out, too?

my lips pressed into the dirt, a kiss for the living.
